Talia Casares Dies Unexpectedly After Being Named Utah’s 2027 Teacher of the Year

Talia Casares is being remembered for the lasting impact she had on her students. The sixth grade teacher at Moroni Elementary School was named Utah’s 2027 Teacher of the Year on Sept. 3. She received a $10,000 award and was preparing to represent Utah in a national competition next year. Casares died unexpectedly less than 2 weeks after receiving the honor.

Casares was originally from Mexico City and earned a master’s degree in Spanish pedagogy from Brigham Young University. Her school district said her love for students, passion for learning and joy in teaching could be seen in everything she did. Casares once said the Teacher of the Year honor belonged to every teacher because they often do things “no one sees.” She leaves behind a legacy of kindness, dedication and the lasting impact she made on the students she taught.
